Tzunwitz is the name of Victoriana Ramírez Vargas De Salucio & family's farm. It translates to where the mountains begin. It’s an evocative name/concept. Things starting & growing. Coffee grows. Quality grows. Problems can, too. Ascending a mountain takes determination. In learning more about Tzunwitz, it became very clear how hard Victoriana had to work to get this coffee into the world. There have been years where things didn’t go right on the farm & lean times (a euphemism; when a farmer, especially a coffee farmer, experiences lean times… Even good years with great crop yields & decent sales terms find farmers in risky financial states). There have been many years where Victoriana’s husband needed to find temporary work in the US to make ends meet for the family & farm. Despite everything, she & the family still give it a go- growing coffee carefully & processing it intentionally. This exceptional coffee's existence isn’t a given. But it is here & I’m grateful to work with what they made. Cheers- cb
(The image on the front label is a photo I took on Penobscot Bay, the only spot on North America's east coast where mountains meet the sea. You might say it's an example of where mountains begin.)
