What’s up folks!? Meet our next Honduran coffee of the 2018-2019 harvest. Its brought to you by the hand and hard work of José Justino López Rivera and his family. López has led a truly exemplary life, demonstrating that with hard work, dedication, and steadfast perseverance, one might be able to pull off some big things. Due to economic hardships, he had to drop out of school in the 6th grade and work farm gigs and odd jobs around Lempira. After saving up some money, he was able to re-enter school for a few more years. From there, he began growing coffee trees, but alas needed to hold off on starting his own farm as he had no land to properly grow them. Alas, he found work in different parts of Honduras and eventually landed in the US. In working in the US, López was able to save money and send it back to his family to begin the process of buying land, building a house, and planting crops. In 2012, López moved back to Honduras and since then he and his family have been busy not only growing coffee but also lemons, pine, guavas, avocados, oranges, and ingas. López’s coffee is hand-picked, mechanically pulped, fermented from 12-16 hours, washed, and patio dried from 5-8 days, until down to a shelf safe moisture level. It’s hard work. And in his case, perhaps like so many other folks’ in coffee’s life, this hard work started YEARS before even planting trees, let alone picking their fruit. We’re glad he made it through though because his coffee is stellar, sweet and clean.
